Susan Sarandon and More Emmy Nominees Tell AD About Their First Apartments
While it's naturally assumed the majority of Hollywood big-shots are living the high-life, it wasn't always that way when they were starting out. We asked three celebrities who are nominated in different categories at the 69th Annual Emmy Awards this upcoming Sunday about their first—and often worst—apartments. Their current homes and even their television sets may be exuding luxury, but these starter pads weren't necessarily examples of splendor.
SUSAN SARANDON: Nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series for Feud: Bette and Joan
"I lived in this place in the East Village, on and off, with a boyfriend. It was one of those places where the bathroom was in the hall and the bathtub was in the kitchen, so you'd go to the bathroom and run into someone you didn't know. That was . . . difficult."
JUDITH LIGHT: Nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Transparent
"One apartment I had here in New York, the windows wouldn't close and when it was winter there would be snow on top of the sofa because the sofa was in front of the windows. When my manager came into this apartment he said, 'I think you need to rethink where you're living.' I think it was on 51st on the East Side."
MARK CUBAN: Nominated for Outstanding Structured Reality Program for Shark Tank
"I had a place in Pittsburgh where I woke up one morning covered in ants. And when I moved to Dallas, I lived in a place called The Village, which was at that time the largest apartment complex in the country. Six guys in a two-bedroom apartment. I slept on the floor. I didn't have a closet. I didn't have a drawer; all my stuff was in a pile on the floor. I had one towel that I basically borrowed from a Motel Six that I stayed in. Yeah, that was a sh** hole!"
