With three of the old continent's top five hotels, as rated by online travel agency eDreams, it seems the Iberian Peninsula holds all the cards.
The Spanish and Portuguese have earned the right to boast about their excellence when it comes to the hotel industry. Their first entry, in second position on the European charts, belongs to Lisbon's Hotel Marquês de Pombal. The Hotel Bahìa Santander, in the Spanish port city of Santander, is right on its heels in third position. Madrid's Hotel Wellington rounds out the Iberian trio while also earning top honors in the Best Service category, scoring 4.8 out of 5.
A closer look at the various categories of this study, the Portuguese capital stands out from its rivals thanks to the Sheraton Lisboa Hotel & Spa, which snatched three first prizes (Rooms, Cleanliness and Style/Design).
The best hotel is Austrian
The Hotel Innsbruck, in the Austrian city of the same name, was voted the best hotel in Europe. The hotel was also recognized as the best in the Dining Experience category, though it had to settle for runner-up for Best Service.
A Czech hotel, the Hotel Roma, was the final establishment in eDreams Top 5.
The survey polled nearly 74,000 eDreams clients from around the world on European hotels with a minimum of 10 comments.
