Cape Codders may have been surprised Monday morning by the fluffy white landscape outside their windows. A light, powdery snow fell through the night and into the morning, leading to late starts at some area schools, and sending shovelers out to battle their driveways.

Snow totals from National Weather Service spotters indicate that the Cape received two to four inches of the white stuff, but luckily, it's not the heavy, wet kind that can produce back-straining despondency. And since the forecast shows a period of warmer temperatures arriving by midweek, it's possible that folks could just let the inevitable melting clear things out.

Here are Cape snow total reports from National Weather Service spotters:

Bourne: 4.0 inches

Sandwich: 3.8 inches

Mashpee: 3.5 inches

Brewster: 2.3 inches

It was a different story in other parts of Massachusetts and in Rhode Island, where a significant amount of snow fell. According to National Weather Service spotters, North Smithfield, RI took the most-snow prize with 10.4 inches of snow, while Douglas, MA saw 9.1 inches.

While warmer weather may be on the way, things are going to be downright chilly on Cape Cod until Wednesday, when temperatures will climb into the mid-40s. Rain and even higher temperatures are in the mix for Thursday and Friday. Here is the Hyannis forecast from the National Weather Service:
