Suranne Jones will lead a new political thriller for Netflix titled The Choice.

The five-part series begins filming in the spring, and comes from Bridge of Spies writer Matt Charman. Jones is also one of the series' executive producers.

Gentleman Jack and Vigil star Jones plays recently-elected British prime minister Abigail Dalton, who's been fighting for office thanks to a healthcare crisis.

Julie Delpy (Avengers: Age of Ultron) stars opposite her as the first-ever woman to be French President, Vivienne Toussaint. Vivienne is "campaigning for re-election no matter what", even if it means making controversial policy decisions about France's borders.

The show's synopsis teases: "A summit between the two women could be the answer to their prayers, if they can agree". But when Abigail's husband is kidnapped and Vivienne is blackmailed, the two leaders face "unimaginable choices".

"Forced into a fierce rivalry where their political futures, and lives, might hang in the balance, can they work together to uncover the plot that threatens them both?" the synopsis adds.

The supporting cast for The Choice will also include Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story's Corey Mylchreest as Toussaint's stepson Matheo Lewis, and Gangs of London's Lucian Msamati as Dalton's chief of staff Kofi Adomako.

They'll be joined by Top Boy and Great Expectations star Ashley Thomas (Great Expectations) as Dr Alex Anderson, Dalton's husband. Meanwhile, James Cosmo plays Dalton's father Max, whose health is ailing.

Musician and actress Jehnny Beth, recently seen in Anatomy of a Fall, plays Toussaint's chief of staff Adrienne Pelletier.

Charman said in a statement: "Writing a tense, high-stakes political thriller about the two most powerful women in the world, and then having Suranne Jones and Julie Delpy play them, is a dream come true for me.

"And making it with Netflix and the incredible Anne Mensah just doesn't get any better. I'm so excited to share this with an audience."

The Choice was announced as part of the streamer's huge Next on Netflix project rollout, which also included a documentary on iconic footballer manager José Mourinho, a new reality series with Bear Grylls and Holly Willoughby, and news on the seventh season of Black Mirror.

The Choice will arrive on Netflix in 2025.
