Supposedly, we’re not just getting a “Mad Max” sequel, but a Furiosa prequel!

Mad Max: Fury Road was one of 2015’s best films — and it took home enough Oscars to prove it. Not only was the film visually stunning; it was a wildly creative movie featuring a host of badass female characters. Chief among those amazingly drawn women was Imperator Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron.

And now, we might be getting even more of Furiosa, much sooner than we thought – emphasis on the “might,” though.

Australia’s Herald Sun reported that not only is Warner Bros. planning to make another Mad Max movie, but they’ve actually already started preproduction, and may begin filming before the year is out. With George Miller returning to direct, the new film will allegedly be a Furiosa prequel!!

The quote from the Herald actually reads:

“The prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road starring Tom Hardy will be filmed in and around Broken Hill [Australia]. Pre-production is gearing up on the multi-million-dollar action-packed Warner Bros franchise…which could start as soon as later this year. Mad Max 4 was plagued by delays when extended rain turned the desert green and the uber director had to move location to Namibia. The script is said to focus on the backstory of Furiosa, played by Oscar winner Charlize Theron.”

On the one hand, this seems legit. Earlier this year when talking to students at Loyola Marymount’s School of Film and TV, Miller discussed writing sequels to Fury Road:

“Because this [Mad Max: Fury Road] got delayed so often, and we dug down deep into the backstory, Nick Lathouris and I have written two other stories. One is a full script. It doesn’t have a title. And one of them we talked about in great detail and he wrote as a novella.”

During this talk, though, Miller also said he wanted to do something “small and quick” before tackling another Mad Max film.

It may be true that one of the stories penned by Miller and Lathouris is a Furiosa prequel, sure – but in that case, would Tom Hardy even be in the film? Fury Road seems to be when the two characters first meet, so it’s odd that he and Theron would film a prequel together. Unless, of course, they crossed paths before, but didn’t know it – if, for example, they were both on opposite sides of a massive road battle, or if Furiosa somehow had ties to one of the people who appears to Max in his flashback/ hallucinations in Fury Road.

We also have to note that we heard similar news in January regarding a Furiosa prequel – which, hopefully, means there’s more truth to it. However, Warner Bros. has yet to confirm or deny, so until then we’ll have to just watch Fury Road, and hope.
