Superior Grocers moves into abandoned Albertsons supermarket building in Victorville

Shopper Thelma Johnson shared her excitement when she discovered that Superior Grocers supermarket was moving into the building that once housed Albertson's grocery store in Victorville.

“That old Albertsons building has been sitting empty for so many years,” said Johnson, who lives near the abandoned building on the corner of Bear Valley and Amethyst roads. “It’s great that Superior is moving in.”

Johnson explained that she was a frequent shopper there before Albertson's closed, stopping by at least once a week. She became a “loyal fan” of Superior Grocers after the company opened a store last fall on the corner of Seventh Street and La Paz Drive in Victorville.

“Superiors has a huge selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, a great meat counter, and a bakery,” Johnson said. “Opening the new store is going to be so convenient.”

Superior Grocers is known for:

  • Fresh produce: Its produce section showcases a variety of locally sourced and fresh produce.

  • Bakery/panaderia: The bakery, or panaderia, offers everything from freshly baked bread to Mexican sweet bread or pan dulce.

  • Meat and seafood department: These sections offer premium cuts to a wide selection of seafood.

  • Tortilleria: Tortillas are made fresh in store.

  • Hot foods: The store offersrestaurant-quality foods and various menu items.

Superior Grocers management told the Daily Press that the company was moving into the nearly 22,840-square-foot Albertsons building, which was built on Bear Valley Road in 1993.

The building is located in the shopping center, which includes AM/PM, Del Taco, Mollie's Kountry Kitchen, and the recently shuttered CVS pharmacy.

“After nearly 15 years, the old Albertsons building is coming back to life,” Victorville Mayor Liz Becerra told the Daily Press. “We welcome Superior Grocers to the west side of Victorville and we hope our citizens do the same.”

Superior Grocers first Victorville store, located near the corner of Seventh Street and La Paz Drive, opened in November 2023. The company will open a second store across town inside the abandoned Albertsons supermarket building on Bear Valley Road.

First Superior Grocers in Victorville

Superior Grocers' first Victorville store, located near the corner of Seventh Street and La Paz Drive, was constructed over 50 years ago for Builders Emporium.

City officials stated that the grocery store took over and fully renovated the nearly 35,000-square-foot building, which housed the High Desert Indoor Swap Meet.

On Thursday, hundreds of customers flooded the Seventh Street store near the popular Ravin's Donuts & Ice Cream shop.

“I decided that Superior Grocers is my favorite supermarket after first shopping here at Thanksgiving,” said Ophelia Martinez of Victorville. “Their meat and produce section is the best, and I love their bakery.”

Employees told the Daily Press that the grocery store has been nonstop busy since opening in November.
