Big Bang Theory guest star Kate Micucci has joined the upcoming fifth season of Supergirl.

Trading Pasadena's Comic Center for the superheroine's stomping ground of National City, TV Line reports that Micucci is onboard to play "a character working in a museum" in the premiere episode.

Waxing lyrical about Micucci's attitude on set, Supergirl executive producer Jessica Queller said: "She's amazing and so sparkly and hysterical," adding that it was "really exciting" to have her around.

With the star's comical qualities in mind, could we be seeing an injection of laughter into the series?

Elsewhere, Queller told Digital Spy and other media that season four's Lena and Kara revelation is going to have big consequences in the forthcoming episodes.

"It's really hugely important. One of the central stories this season is the friendship between Lena and Kara and whether or not it can survive," she explained.

"Lena's Achilles' heel is betrayal, and she has made that clear to her friends from the beginning. And the way she found out about this betrayal – Lex [Luthor] twisting the knife and sort of pouring salt in the wound – affects how she feels about it. That will be a huge central story".

Supergirl airs on The CW in the US. Sky One and NOW TV air the show in the UK.
