Super Tuesday voting underway in Shelby County

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — WREG News Channel 3 is your local election headquarters, and today is Super Tuesday, one of the biggest days when it comes to preparing for the November election.

Polls open across Tennessee at 7 a.m. and will stay open until 7 p.m. In Arkansas, you can vote from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Takeaways from Trump’s Supreme Court win: He stays on ballot, but his legal peril is just starting

Linda Phillps with Shelby County’s Administration of Elections, says the process for voters should run more smoothly and quickly.

“The new machines are making this process so much easier. When we had the old machines for early voting we had almost 400 machines we had to close out. Now, we have 26,” Phillips said.

This will help with getting results back quicker.  But for Thomas Bolden, his vote almost didn’t count.

“They scanned my ID and they said I already voted,” Bolden told WREG. “I was there for 45 minutes. They kept calling but no one could correct it. They finally did something and let me vote.”

We reached out to the Shelby County Election Commission to see what happened. They said:

“We regret any voter having a longer-than-usual time at the polls, but sometimes extra eligibility verification is necessary to protect election integrity. We train our poll workers to be extremely cautious and guard against voters trying to vote more than once. We’re not saying that’s the case here. However, in rare instances, a few voters have tried. Therefore, we must do our diligence and verify when there’s any question or potential confusion.”
