SUNY Delhi adds recognition events for grads

Apr. 24—SUNY Delhi is establishing two new recognition events for graduating students this spring. The Lavender Ceremony and the Kente Celebration will be held in April "to honor the diversity and accomplishments of Delhi's graduates," according to a media release from the college.

The Lavender Ceremony will honor lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and ally students and acknowledge their achievements and contributions to the college, the release said. Graduating seniors will be given lavender cords and a rainbow tassel for their caps to wear at graduation.

The Kente Celebration will commemorate the rite of passage for students who are transitioning from college to the next chapter of their lives. The Kente stole represents academic and personal achievement and a celebration of overcoming obstacles. Originating from West Africa, Kente is a symbol of dignity and pride, the release said. Graduating students participating in the celebration will receive a Kente stole to wear at commencement.

"Instituting these new traditions for graduating students reflects SUNY Delhi's ongoing commitment to fostering an environment that is inclusive of all members of our campus community," said Mary Bonderoff, acting president at SUNY Delhi. "We want every graduate to know that the campus stands by their side to celebrate this momentous moment in their lives. I couldn't be prouder of the graduating class of 2024."

"I am excited to experience both of these inaugural celebrations, which embody SUNY Delhi's dedication to harmony and inclusivity, fostering unity and understanding among our diverse campus community," said Louis A. Reyes Jr., interim chief diversity officer at SUNY Delhi. "I am thankful for the support of our institution in making these visions a reality."

The new celebrations will complement SUNY Delhi's existing Presidential Graduation Celebration for all graduating students with food, music, and activities to be held in May, according to the release.

SUNY Delhi will hold its 107th commencement ceremony Saturday, May 18.
