Sunday fatality the latest train incident in Lodi

May 19—A man was killed Sunday evening when his vehicle was struck by a train on the south end of Lodi.

The California Highway Patrol said the driver of a white Honda Civic was traveling west on Armstrong Road at about 6 p.m. when it appeared he tried to go around the crossing arms at Pearson Road and was struck by the southbound train.

The vehicle overturned and ended up on its side, reports state, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Union Pacific Railroad said no crew members were injured in the collision.

The San Joaquin County Coroner and Medical Examiner's Office identified the driver as 49-year-old Puthy Sok of Stockton.

Sunday's collision is the third in the Lodi area in five weeks, and the second to result in a fatality.

On April 23 at about 12:20 p.m., CHP officers responded to a collision involving a mall SUV and a train on Kettleman Lane just west of DeVries Road.

The CHP said at the time that the driver of the SUV attempted to cross the railroad tracks as the gate arms were descending. The SUV, which was towing a camper, was struck by the train and then ran into an electrical box nearby.

Woodbridge Fire District said one occupant was airlifted from the scene and another was taken by ambulance to an area hospital. A dog was also injured in the collision, the district said.

On April 27 at abut 7:33 p.m., Lodi Police Department received a call from Union Pacific Railroad that a pedestrian had been struck by one of its southbound trains near Turner Road.

Officers attempted to perform life-saving measures on the woman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Union Pacific said the incident occurred near Sacramento Street and Turner Road, and not near a railroad crossing.
