Sundance Wicks named Horizon League Coach of the Year in first season, other Phoenix earn season-ending accolades

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – The Green Bay Phoenix men’s basketball team earned multiple end-of-season awards including head coach Sundance Wicks being named as the Horizon League’s Coach of the Year.

According to a release, the Horizon League office announced the awards Monday afternoon and named Sundance Wicks as the league’s Coach of the Year after he led the Phoenix on a major turnaround where in just 10 months, the Green Bay men’s basketball team went from being ranked the second worst in Division I college basketball to at one point being in first place in the Horizon League standings.

With the regular season now over, Wicks led the men’s team to an 18-13 record which is the most regular season wins in a season since 2016-2017 and the third-most by a first-year Phoenix head coach.

Wicks is the first Phoenix coach to be named Horizon League Coach of the Year since Brian Wardle earned the award back in the 2013-2014 season.

Other Green Bay Phoenix earning end-of-season awards are Noah Reynolds, David Douglass Jr., and Marcus Hall.

Reynolds, who totaled 21.4 points and 4.7 assists per game, earned the award for the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year and was also named to the All-League First Team.

Douglass Jr., who recorded 9.1 points per game, was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year and earned a place on the All-Freshman team. Hall also was named to the All-League Freshman team.

The Phoenix will look to add more hardware to their names with a conference championship and an NCAA March Madness Tournament bid on the line when the Horizon League Tournament tips off on March 5.

With Green Bay finishing third in the Horizon League standings, they earned themselves a first-round bye and will host the highest remaining seed from the first round at the Kress Center on Thursday, March 7 at 8:00 p.m.
