Sunbury winery owner charged with a misdemeanor count for issuing a worthless check

May 2—SUNBURY — A Sunbury businessman faces a misdemeanor charge of issuing a bad check after state police allege he failed to pay $24,000 to a musical act that performed at his property.

State police filed the criminal charge against Tom Webb, owner of Spyglass Glass Ridge Winery who also serves on the Shikellamy School Board, for allegedly failing to pay the band Get The Led Out, which performed at the winery property on Sept. 16.

Webb, who is a Shikellamy School Board director, was charged April 29, according to court documents.

According to a criminal complaint, an attorney was retained by GTLO Productions LLC, regarding a check that was issued to the band on Sept. 16 by Spyglass Ridge Winery and authorized for $24,000.

The complaint alleges when the check was deposited on Oct.18 it was returned for insufficient funds.

The booking agent for the band attempted to correct the matter with Webb through email and text messages, but got negative results, state police wrote in court documents.

On March 28, an attorney for the band contacted the state police and advised a certified letter was sent to Spyglass Ridge Winery, and six days later, Webb called and claimed financial hardships and had intentions of paying by the end of March.

Troopers say they spoke to Webb on March 28 and advised him of the situation. Webb said when the check was written, it was valid, but since the time the check was written and the time it was cashed, large withdrawals were made from his account, according to the complaint.

Webb claims the issue is a business disagreement, and that be believed it was a civil, not a criminal matter.

Webb said Thursday that he is handling the case legally and planned on speaking with the attorneys involved in the case.

Webb told state police he received the certified letter and he had no intentions on "stiffing Get The Led Out," noting that he thought it would be fine to pay them by the end of April, according to the criminal complaint.
