Sumner County traffic stop leads to arrest of ‘dangerous fugitive,’ deputies say

SUMNER COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office turned to social media Saturday to commend its deputies, saying their proactive policing resulted in the apprehension of two people — including a “dangerous fugitive” — and the recovery of a stolen car during a traffic stop this week.

According to authorities, a deputy was monitoring traffic just before 2 a.m. when he spotted a black sedan violating two motor vehicle laws, so he quickly performed a traffic stop.

While addressing the driver and the passenger — identified by officials as Chandyn McGary and Veretez McGill, respectively — the deputy explained the reason for the stop and issued a warning.

However, further investigation revealed that not only was the car’s temporary tag fake, but the car itself was reported stolen from Nashville. In addition, the sheriff’s office said a handgun was found on the passenger’s seat, hidden by McGill’s legs, and a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of another counterfeit temporary tag.

Authorities said they later learned McGill had an active warrant from the Tennessee Department of Correction for violating parole on charges including aggravated assault and facilitating second-degree murder.

According to officials, both McGary and McGill were charged with theft of property for the stolen vehicle, as well as altering or forging the titles or plates for the fake temporary tags. McGill will also face charges for unlawfully carrying a firearm as a known felon.

“We commend the proactive efforts of the deputies involved, whose vigilance and dedication to duty led to the successful arrest of these individuals, preventing further potential harm to our community,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post on Saturday, May 11. “Such exemplary policing exemplifies our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents.”
