Summerlin residents left in the dark due to broken streetlights

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A problem seen across the valley is now leaving parts of Summerlin in the dark.

Alan Altman has been a part of the Villa Trieste at West Park community in Summerlin for more than a decade and said he and his neighbors are at their wit’s end when it comes to their streetlights being out.

“Probably half of the streetlights in this area are out,” Altman shared with 8 News Now. “We’ve been trying to get these lights fixed, but nobody cares and nobody will respond.”

Altman along with several other neighbors have used the “Fixit Clark County” app to request repairs, yet nothing has been done. Altman, who is also the HOA President of his community said with darkness comes an increase in crime.

“We’ve noticed a lot of vehicle thefts and windows being broken. It’s very easy to just break the window and grab something and run out when it’s pitch black out,” he added.

Due to the influx of crime, the Villa Trieste community has now hired on-site security. Just a couple blocks away, those who live in Allerton Park, are also concerned for their safety.

“My daughter ran with me and we couldn’t believe how dark it was behind the community and also turning onto Desert Foothills,” Summerlin resident, Cheryl Dunlap said.

What is a typically safe neighborhood has residents now thinking twice before leaving home, Cheryl’s daughter, Olivia said.

“Sometimes the lights are on and then sometimes they are completely off and it’s scary especially with us teenage girls walking home alone,” Olivia Dunlap-Schlange shared.
