What will summer weather be like in New York this year? Here's what Farmers' Almanac predicts

Last year marked the warmest year on record globally. With several consecutive months experiencing record-high temperatures, many are curious about what to anticipate for the upcoming summer.

If the Farmers' Almanac has predicted correctly, New Yorkers should can expect "sultry" and "soggy" conditions going into the summer.

The almanac, which has been predicting weather (with varying accuracy) since 1818, recently released its extended weather forecast for the upcoming summer, titled "Summer Soaker Ahead."

Here's what the Farmers' Almanac has predicted for this summer.

What is the Farmers' Almanac predicting for New York's upcoming summer forecast?

"Hold on to your umbrellas … and tune up your AC," the almanac says. "Summer is coming early this year, and it may bring the hottest temperatures in recorded history!"

The almanac's 200-year-old mathematical and astronomical formula indicates a "sultry, soggy" summer for the Northeast and New England, which includes New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and D.C.

"Gardeners in New England who saw a soggy summer season last year may want to plan 'rain gardens' this year with plants that love a lot of water," the almanac says, suggesting marigolds, forget-me-nots, canna lilies, day lilies, irises and hibiscus.

Weather predictions in New York on upcoming holidays

The almanac forecasts the following in the Northeast and New England for these upcoming holidays.

  • Mother's Day, May 12: "Unsettled, with a few light rain shower."

  • Father's Day, June 16: "Widespread cloudiness."

  • Fourth of July: "Fair skies, generally pleasant."

What is the Farmers' Almanac?

Farmers' Almanac is an annual American periodical that has been in continuous publication since 1818, providing long-range weather predictions for the U.S. and Canada. The almanac states that its readers find its predictions to be accurate about 80% to 85% of the time.

But the Columbus Dispatch found that most analyses of the almanac's predictions have indicated an accuracy rate of 50%.
