Summer job hiring sends Spain unemployment down

Summer tourist season temporary hiring sends Spain registered jobless figure down in May

MADRID (AP) -- Spain's Labor Ministry says the number of people registered as unemployed fell by a little under 100,000 in May as employers ramped up hiring in preparation for the busy summer tourist season.

The ministry said Tuesday that the total number of workers registered as jobless stands at 4.89 million.

Spain has been in recession for most of the past four years as the economy struggles to emerge from the collapse of its once-booming real estate sector.

Spain's unemployment rate was a record 27.2 percent during the first quarter.
