Summer cookouts in Louisiana to cost more than last year, data shows

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The average prices for cookouts across the nation have increased over the past year. This year’s average price in Louisiana is almost $90.

Data collected from the Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks changes in the price of food items and energy month-to-month and year-to-year in the Midwest, West, Northeast and South regions.

The prices of common food items per region have increased from 2023 data. In 2023, the South region was expected to pay roughly around $83.70 for groceries for a cookout of about 10 people, according to the data. In 2024, residents in southern states are expected to pay around $87.76, which is a $4 increase.

The prices are based on a cookout of 10 people with each person getting one plate of food. One plate would contain a 4-ounce cheeseburger with lettuce, onion, tomato, ketchup and mustard, a hot dog, servings of baked beans, potato salad, potato chips, strawberries, ice cream, cookies and a 12-ounce soda.

Other regions’ average prices for 2024 include $84.99 in the Midwest, $90.33 in the Northeast and $94.55 in the West. Data shows the national average of all regions is $89.41, which is a 3.6% increase from 2023.
