As summer approaches, Brighton Area Schools preps for renovations

BRIGHTON — With school coming to a close for the summer, two renovation projects at Brighton Area Schools will soon begin.

The first is a $2.03 million renovation of the east wing at the district’s Brighton Education and Community Center, which houses the district's alternative high school, community education department and administrative offices.

Expected to start in July, the renovation will install new windows throughout much of the building, plus a new internal HVAC system. It will not impact summer programming.

Some of the building materials and windows aren't expected to arrive until August, so the project timeline will extend into the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year, according to BAS Finance Director David Jones.

Students at The Bridge Alternative High School will begin classes in August in the north wing of the building, and will move into renovated classrooms as work is completed.

Some district administrators and the community education department may be displaced for a period of time, but no school classes or student programming will be impacted, said District Superintendent Matt Outlaw.

The other renovation project is an update of all bathrooms at Hilton Elementary School. That project is set to begin in mid-June and will conclude about one week before the fall semester starts, based on the contract finalized with renovation vendors.

“You never know what you’ll find out (with unexpected plumbing work) once you (start the renovation) but we’ll be ready for anything,” Jones said.

The district will not host any summer programming at Hilton Elementary this year, according to Outlaw. The cost of the project is $527,000.
