BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL)—The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) celebrated National Police Week with a memorial service on Friday to honor 13 fallen members.

Former President John F. Kennedy designated the week of May 15 as National Police Week in 1962, with May 15 recognized as National Peace Officers Memorial Day. Every year during the observed week, the SCSO honors its members who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The SCSO remembered 12 officers and one constable at the memorial service.

“It’s extremely important just to show them that we’ll never forget about them,” said Sheriff Jeff Cassidy. “We’ll never forget about their families because those families have sacrificed a lot; they’re without a mother or father, a brother or sister. The sons and daughters are without parents, so they’ve made those ultimate sacrifices, too.”

Cassidy said it is important to remember who all is part of ‘protect and serve.’

“Just remembering those officers that paid the ultimate sacrifice in the protection of their localities, their municipalities, their counties, whether it be state or federal, just to pay respect and never forget,” he said.

Blountville Christian Church hosted the event.
