New suicide prevention campaign has resources, guides to help people

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is empowering people to have brave conversations about mental health as part of its new Talk Away the Dark campaign during Mental Health Awareness Month.

The group encourages people to ask direct questions if struggles are not improving.

“We try to teach people to recognize warning signs that may manifest themselves in one or three different ways. Usually, it’s change in talk, change in mood or change in behavior,” Vic Armstrong, vice president of health equity at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention said.

REAL ID deadline is fast approaching: Are you prepared?

The campaign’s website has more information and resources about how to spot the warning signs of suicide and how to start a conversation to help someone.

Anyone in a crisis can call or text 988 or text TALK to 741741.
