Substitute teacher in Holt removed after accusations of 'inappropriate behavior'

DELHI TWP. — School officials are investigating after a substitute teacher was accused of "inappropriately behavior" Wednesday at Hope Middle School.

"In the afternoon, a group of students reported a substitute teacher had engaged in inappropriate conduct. When school leadership learned of these concerns, the school district began a review and the substitute teacher was removed from the building," a letter from the Central Office Administration Team sent to parents via email Thursday said.

The letter said the district would provide further updates on the review as information becomes available.

"We followed all reporting guidelines in this matter, and we are working with local law enforcement," the letter said.

A message was left Friday morning with Ingham County Sheriff's Office Lt. Chauncey Shattuck.

It is unclear if the substitute teacher has a long work history within the district. Friday morning, Christine Lopez, assistant to Superintendent David Hornak, referred all questions to communication firm Byrum & Fisk, which didn't immediately respond to questions.

Hope Middle School, 2020 Park Lane, serves students in grades five and six, according to the district's website.

"Our district takes reports of inappropriate conduct very seriously," the letter said. "Our teachers and staff members are held to the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct, including an obligation to treat students with dignity, respect and to adhere to our school code of conduct as well as state laws."

The letter does not outline how many students were involved or what the alleged behavior was.

The letter said officials "understand that reporting inappropriate conduct can be uncomfortable and difficult" and they are "proud of the students who brought these concerns to our attention."

The letter also notes that mental health experts will be available for any student who needs support. The letter also encourages families to report any concerning behavior to the district.
