Subject armed with ‘edged weapon’ fatally shot by officer during stabbing call, Wisconsin DOJ investigating

BELOIT, Wis. (WFRV) – A man who was reportedly armed with an ‘edged weapon’ was fatally shot by officers on Thursday after a woman was found to be stabbed in southern Wisconsin.

According to a release from the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), its Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating an officer-involved death that happened in Beloit on Thursday afternoon.

Around 3:25 p.m. on May 16, officers with the Beloit Police Department responded to a 911 call for a reported stabbing near the 2000 block of Frederick Street. When officers arrived, a woman was found with stab wounds.

Authorities then found a subject who was allegedly armed with an ‘edged weapon,’ who was reportedly making violent threats to harm a second person believed to be inside a Beloit residence.

The release states that one officer utilized a less lethal option, but that was ineffective. A second Beloit officer then discharged their firearm, hitting the subject. Life-saving measures were performed, however, the subject was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was noted that the woman who sustained stab wounds was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to a trauma center. She is believed to be in stable condition. An officer was also treated for minor injuries sustained in the incident.

It was later determined that no other persons were inside the residence. Authorities were able to recover ‘edged weapons’ at the scene.

According to the DOJ’s release, the officers are on administrative leave, per agency policy. Body cameras were being worn during the incident.

“DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Rock County District Attorney when the investigation concludes,” officials with the Wisconsin DOJ stated.

DCI is leading the investigation and is being assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol Technical Reconstruction Unit, Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory, Rock County Sheriff’s Office, Beloit Fire Department, Rock County Medical Examiner’s Office, Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office, a DCI Crime Response Specialist, and members of the DCI Digital Evidence Unit.

All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with the DCI, authorities say.
