New study shows which states have the cheapest high-quality cannabis. Here’s how WA ranked

It doesn’t matter who you are, or how much you’ve been exposed to cannabis. The vast majority of people will tell you the same day if you ask for a day represented by weed — April 20, aka 4/20.

The term 420 actually stems from a 1971 San Francisco group of friends who decided to meet at a statue outside their school at 4:20 to look for a pot farm they’d been told about. Even though they never found it, over time 420 became code for meeting up to smoke weed, and is referenced as a common time of day to have a smoke.

The slang grew in popularity when the Grateful Dead picked it up, and it eventually also became a calendar date of stoner celebration.

With April 20, 2024 just around the corner, Lance Surety Bonds analyzed data to determine which state has high-quality cannabis for the best deal. Here’s how Washington stacked up.

States with the cheapest quality cannabis

On top of average prices, the study also looked at estimated revenue potential and relative value in each state.

This revealed the average national cost of a high-quality joint of about .66 grams is $7.57. The average cost of a high-quality ounce is $325.

When comparing each state, and the D.C., Washington came out with the second most affordable cannabis in the country.

In Washington, the average price of one high-quality joint is $5.42. The average price of one ounce of high-quality cannabis is $233.

The only state to beat out the Evergreen State was Oregon, at $4.91 a joint and $211 for an ounce. Colorado took third place.

On the flip side, in the most expensive, D.C., a joint is $13.92 and an ounce is $598.

Based on the Lance Surety Study, Washington is estimated to make $272,510,367 in cannabis revenue in 2024, equal to .70% of the total state revenue potential. The study’s main sources were the Tax Foundation think tank and NuggMD, a telehealth service focused on cannabis.
