Students in Monroe County celebrate Science Day

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Students in Monroe County put on their lab coats and goggles to become scientists for a day. Teachers not only hoped students got experiment results out of the day but a new love for science.

“Science Day here is for fifth graders, we’re trying to instill a sense of excitement for science,” said East Stroudsburg South High School 10th grader Allyson Mayor.

High school students at East Stroudsburg South High School organized and hosted around 400 fifth graders Wednesday in a day filled with fun and facts.

“The students for my gifted department program have organized every aspect of the event, except for the teaching,” said East Stroudsburg South High School Teacher Paul Kernan.

The high school students were eager and wanted to share their love of science with younger kids, so with the help of the high school administration they created this special day.

“Administration had meetings with students, and they wanted to see that we could help project more like science experiences to younger grades,” Mayor explained.

Throughout the day the fifth graders moved around to different presentations and experiments that covered a lot of different aspects of the subject

“We have several stations where we have chemistry, anatomy. We also have environmental science. It’s just several different stations that go over different topics of science,” Mayor continued.

One fifth grader was surprised and happy to spend the day at the high school.

“It was actually a surprise that we were going to high school south in the first place. I didn’t really actually know we were going. I thought we were just going to a middle school not a high school,” said fifth-grader Jordyn Huffman.

The staff and organizers of the day hope the students left today with a better understanding of the world around them.

“Hope that the fifth graders had a great time here, and I’m hoping that this was an experience that they remember for years,” Kernan said.

“We want them to feel sudden excitement for science to really feel sense of joy and see where they could be a part of science themselves,” Mayor stated.

Over 350 students participated in Wednesday’s event and teachers and students say they already can’t wait for next year’s event.
