Students hit pavement for Opioid Awareness Month

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Local pharmacy students organized a yearly opioid awareness walk.

April is Opioid Awareness Month and students at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre hit the pavement Thursday to make others aware of the epidemic.

The students also sell t-shirts and hotdogs and all proceeds are donated to the Wilke Barre Fire Department.

The fire department typically handles overdose calls and they say the extra money will come in handy.

The fire chief says he’s grateful to have young members of the community who care about its future.

“It just goes to show how much these pharmacy students care about their emergency services. It’s a partnership so that’s why I come out here to show my support,” said Wilkes-Barre Fire Department Chief Jay Delaney.

Chief Delaney says they have seen a difference since working with the students.
