Students, fraternities file temporary restraining order against UMD for halting Greek life activity

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (DC News Now) — A group of students and fraternities petitioned the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland for a temporary restraining order against University of Maryland (UMD) administrators for their decision in suspending Greek life activity.

The temporary restraining order would prevent the university from putting any restrictions on students and fraternities and sororities.

The petition comes after the university halted all Greek life events indefinitely on March 1. UMD sent out a letter to students announcing its investigation into allegations of misconduct and also required students to comply in its investigation or face disciplinary action. But the petition claims that UMD’s decision “runs afoul to basic notions of due process” as officials did not suggest any “actual wrongdoing,” according to a news release from the Fraternity Forward Coalition.

“We have never seen such an egregious abuse of power in higher education administration. Administrators began with their preferred outcome – that fraternities and sororities must be cut down to size. So, they launched a dragnet operation that infringes students’ civil liberties and subverts the school’s own administrative procedures,” a spokesperson with the Fraternity Forward Coalition stated in the release.

UMD will provide an update to its investigation on March 15.
