Students arrested, campus police chief hospitalized at Thursday’s PSU protest

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Following protests at Portland State University on Thursday night, the school shared that the chief of campus police was hospitalized and that several students were among those arrested.

According to PSU, during the protests, a group marched to the Richard & Maurine Neuberger Center and protesters chained themselves to the doors for a second time.

The chained protesters were asked to leave and declined, the school said. This is when both campus and Portland police responded to the scene.

There were seven total arrests, three of whom were confirmed by the school to be current students.

During the event, PSU president Ann Cudd said in a statement that physical force had to be used against the students and that at some point, chief of campus police Willie Halliburton had to be taken to the hospital after suffering a “medical emergency.” No other information about the emergency was given.

In her statement, Cudd also called on the protests to stop, saying “it is not a campus atmosphere that can sustain any of us at Portland State.”

Cudd added that she has been working to engage with protesters and meet with community members and student groups to come to an agreement on the demands made by the Associated Students of Portland State University.
