Students can apply for more than 100 scholarships this month

HOLLAND — The application window for nearly $1 million in scholarships from the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area is now open, with dozens of financial aid opportunities for local students.

Each year, CFHZ awards over $950,000 to local students pursuing higher education. In addition to over 100 returning scholarships, five new funds have been established in the past year.

Graduating high school seniors, current college students and adults returning to school can apply for multiple scholarships at once through the organization's general application form. Applications are due at 5 p.m. Friday, March 1.

New scholarship opportunities this year cover a variety of life circumstances and interests.

The Alexa Lindsey Memorial Scholarship is for high school seniors and older students who “have been impacted by adoption.” The Franz Family Scholarship for Families Impacted by Cancer is open to graduating seniors who have or previously had cancer, or have a sibling or parent who has battled cancer.

Graduating high school seniors enrolling at Hope College and planning to major or minor in music can apply for the new Aschbrenner-Spencer Music Scholarship.

The Chad Wolff Memorial Scholarship is open to Holland High School graduating seniors with special needs, plans to study special education, student athletes or athletic team supporters.

The fifth new fund, The Zeeland High School Class of 1966 Scholarship, will support students through the CFHZ Promise Scholarship Program.

CFHZ also has several employer-sponsored scholarships with separate applications. They include the Haworth Skilled Trades Scholarship and the Haworth Diversity Scholarship with Paid Internship. Applications for those programs are due by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14.

A full list of scholarships is available online. They include funds by area of study, by high school, for students already in college and for adults returning to school.
