This Student Transformed an Empty Caravan Into a Shabby Chic Home For Just $6,000
Owning a home in your 20s sounds like an impossible dream for many, but 24-year-old Maggie Butler pulled it off thanks to some seriously savvy DIY skills.
Fresh out of college, Maggie returned home to Richmond, Tasmania, and needed somewhere to live. While she had the option to live with her parents, she wanted her own place, but couldn't afford an apartment just yet. She turned to her local Craigslist (known as Gumtree in Australia) and found a caravan for $2,000. The caravan was practically bare, so Maggie saw an opportunity to get creative. She purchased it, and brought it right outside her parents' home.
In just under a year, Maggie transformed the caravan into a full-fledged home, including a cozy bedroom nook, bathroom, shower, kitchenette, and living area. Our favorite part, however, might be her decor, which has an antique, vintage look.
The transformation may look nice, but it only cost her $6,000: The caravan was $2,000 and remodeling costs totaled $4,000 .
Maggie was able to keep costs impressively low by using recycled materials and remaking furniture pieces-as seen below-she found in the classifieds. In fact, she didn't spend more than $100 on any one thing!
Her friends also helped her install the wiring and plumbing, saving her from pricey professional installation. For almost everything else, Maggie did it on her own, relying on YouTube videos for DIY tips. "Doing it all myself was quite an experience, but it was really rewarding. I liked the challenge," she told the DailyMail.
