Student in stable condition after stabbing at Mount Vernon High School

A Mount Vernon High School student was stabbed multiple times shortly before dismissal Thursday afternoon and a suspect was taken into custody, city officials said.

The stabbing occurred just before 2:45 p.m. The 15-year-old boy was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx and listed in stable condition.

In a statement, acting schools Superintendent K. Veronica Smith did not reference a stabbing but said a physical altercation among students ended in an assault in the first-floor hallway. She said school security took the victim to the nurse, put the building in 'hold-in-place' and lockout status and apprehended the 16-year-old suspect.

Police officials could not be reached regarding whether the suspect has been charged.

Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call Mount Vernon police detectives at 914-665-2510 or text "MVPD" and the tip to 847411.
