Student shot near Ferris State University in Mich.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Police in western Michigan are investigating a student's shooting at an off-campus apartment complex near Ferris State University.

Officials at the college in Big Rapids, about 50 miles north of Grand Rapids, canceled classes, basketball games and other sporting events Saturday in the hours after the 4:15 a.m. shooting at the Venlo Place apartments.

The university said on its website Saturday afternoon that police searched two apartments on the campus looking for the person believed to have shot the student, but they turned up nothing.

The victim, whose name and condition were not released, was transferred to a Grand Rapids hospital. His wounds were not believed to be life-threatening.

The school canceled men and women's basketball games against Saginaw Valley State University and a high school hockey game.
