Student inside Dunbar High School in DC hit by bullet fired from outside

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said a student who was inside a high school in Northwest was hurt Friday morning after a bullet fired from outside of the building hit her.

Just before 10 a.m., officers went to the school, located at 101 N St. NW, after they received reports of gunfire. Investigators said it appeared that a bullet fired outdoors went into the building and grazed the 17-year-old girl whom it hit.

At 10:22 a.m. MPD said in a post on X that there was no active threat to students, faculty or staff at Dunbar High School, which did go on lockdown for a time.

MPD later explained that a vehicle was heading the wrong way on Kirby Street NW. At some point, there was an exchange of gunfire between people.

The girl who was hurt as a result of the exchange was at the hospital being treated. Her family was with her, and police said she should be alright, physically.

Detectives planned to canvas the neighborhood throughout the afternoon.
