Student with handgun at Union County high school arrested: Sheriff

UNION COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A student who had a gun on the campus of a Union County high school was arrested Thursday, the Union County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies in Waxhaw responded to calls regarding the incident around 10 a.m. on Thursday at Marvin Ridge High School. The student, who is not being identified because he is under the age of 18, was located within five minutes and a 9mm handgun was seized, the sheriff’s office said.

“Based on the details gathered thus far in this ongoing investigation, the student who possessed the weapon did not use it to directly harm or threaten any students or staff members before it was located and seized,” the sheriff’s office said.

Charges of felony possession of a weapon on a school campus are pending.

“Parents, as you know, it takes everyone to keep our school campuses safe. Please take the time to talk to your student about bringing inappropriate items to school. Weapons are not allowed in our schools and both UCPS and UCSO will continue to maintain a zero-tolerance approach for weapons possession offenses,” the school district said.
