A student has died after being found unresponsive on a school bus Thursday morning.

According to Gaston County Schools, the Holbrook Middle School student passed out, became unresponsive and later died.

"This is devastating news for our school family, and we are heartbroken," Holbrook Middle School Principal Torben Ross wrote in a message to parents Thursday.

In a press release, Gaston County Police said the incident happened around 8 a.m.

Life-saving efforts were initiated by the Lowell Police School Resource Officer working at the school. GEMS continued these efforts as the juvenile was transported to Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia where additional life-saving efforts were unsuccessful, the press release said.

One of the tools officers utilize when confronted with unresponsive individuals is Narcan. In this incident, Narcan was administered to the child in case there was some type of exposure to any narcotics. The Narcan did not have any effect on the juvenile indicating this was not likely a drug overdose, according to the press release.

While they are awaiting results from the Medical Examiner's Office, investigators say that the child may have suffered from a previously unknown medical condition.

The principal's message said that counselors and additional staff were on campus to provide support.

"Please keep the student's family, friends and classmates in your thoughts and prayers - I know that all of us will come together to support our school family as we mourn the loss of one of our very own," Ross wrote.
