Student arrested after bringing gun to Woodside High School

A Woodside High School student brought a gun to school Wednesday, triggering a lockdown before the firearm was recovered and he was taken into custody, officials said.

In an email to students, parents and staff, Woodside administrators said someone reported a student had brought a gun to campus.

“We immediately took swift action, initiated a lockdown, contacted the police and conducted a security search of the student,” the email said.

A gun was found in the student’s belongings. He was taken into police custody and is facing expulsion, administrators said.

The lockdown was lifted by 11 a.m.

Police declined to share additional details. Why the student brought the gun to school is unknown.

The incident comes nearly two months after a 6-year-old student brought a gun to Richneck Elementary School and shot 25-year-old first grade teacher Abby Zwerner.

It was the third shooting on Newport News Public Schools property in 18 months. The case has been turned over by police to the commonwealth’s attorney’s office, which will decide who — if anyone — should be charged with a crime.
