Student airlifted to hospital after fight at Lincoln Middle School

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A Lincoln Middle School student was transported a nearby hospital by helicopter after a physical fight with another student in a campus bathroom on Monday afternoon, school officials confirmed.

In a note to families, Principal Cesar Mora said that paramedics had been called to the Oceanside school’s campus around 1 p.m. to assess the student as a “precautionary measure.”

The paramedics then determined the helicopter transport was necessary for further evaluation by medical personnel, school officials added.

No additional information was immediately available about the wounds paramedics were concerned about, although a school official on Wednesday said the student was released shortly after arriving at the hospital with no serious injuries. The other student was uninjured.

Oceanside Police Department (OPD) public information officer Tom Bussey told FOX 5/KUSI on Wednesday that the airlift following the fight at Lincoln Middle was something he has never seen before in his 50 years with the agency.

“That’s pretty much the first that I’ve seen,” he said. “I’ve seen or had complaints you know where kids were fighting and stuff, but it was all superficial.”

“This is something that came between two kids and you know they worked it out together that they were going to have this fight, even where they were going to have it, so it’s something you typically don’t see,” Bussey continued.

While staff worked to get the situation under control, students were rerouted in the passing period to “ensure their safety,” Mora said. Once it was cleared, regular school activities continued for students.

“Please rest assured that the health and safety of all our students remains our top priority,” Mora said in the note to families, adding they believed the incident was isolated and were actively investigating.

“I think it’s good for parents who have kids who go to the school to tell them that these are the kind of things that happen and you need to avoid,” added Bussey.
