Carriage house destroyed in early-morning Elmira fire

Correction: A previous version of this story misidentified the structure that caught fire. The story was updated to reflect that the structure was a historic carriage house.

UPDATE: The Elmira Fire Department has provided more information into a fire that broke out Wednesday morning at the historic carriage house behind the former Christmas House.

Fire Chief Andrew Mallow said that large flames were present well before crews arrived to battle the fire. Mallow added that the structure collapsed after fire crews arrived, taking two hours to extinguish.

The city brought in heavy machinery to extinguish the remaining bits of the fire by moving debris.

Mallow confirmed that New York State Fire Investigators out of Albany are investigating the fire due to city crews being assigned to the fire on Lyon Street.

Mallow said the two fires do not appear to be related and that the causes of each fire remain under investigation.
