We love our coffee, but we’re a little scared of this coffee. The strongest coffee in the world has just hit the US.

It’s called “Black Insomnia.”

This potent strain of coffee combines Ugandan, Guatemalan, and Brazilian coffee beans. So it’s basically the Super Team of caffeinated beverages. Black Insomnia hit the market in South Africa last year, and it’s finally made its way to the United States.

Finally, the Herculean coffee of our dreams is here to keep us awake early in the morning. And through the post-lunch slump. And after work when we feel too tired to go to our spin class without liquid energy to buoy us through. Black Insomnia, you are such stuff as dreams are made of.

But maybe we should be careful what we wish for, because as it turns out, the strongest coffee in the world comes with some pretty strong drawbacks.

Sure, it sounds good in theory. Black Insomnia is twice as strong as Starbuck’s dark roast. Sign us up for that. Or actually, hmmm, maybe don’t sign us up for that, because a single 12 oz cup of Black Insomnia contains about 700 mg of caffeine. And the FDA recommends we consume no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day. Try as we might, we just can’t get these numbers to add up to a drink that sounds like it’s good for our bodies.

Also, Black Insomnia comes with a list of potential side effects, which include kind of worrisome symptoms like jitteriness, restlessness, nervousness, and difficulty sleeping. (Well, insomnia IS in the freaking name, after all.) And on the super-worrisome side, people who drink Black Insomnia could experience cardiac arrhythmia, AKA heart palpitations.

So we have to ask, is all that worth it for a caffeine buzz? Even, like, the best caffeine buzz ever? If so, then good luck to you as dance the Tango Black Insomnia.
