Strong winds likely Tuesday with possibility of hail and a tornado

Jan. 2—Thunderstorms are likely to bring strong winds and possibly hail into the Decatur area on Tuesday, and there's a slight possibility of a tornado, the National Weather Service said.

Andy Kula, a meteorologist in the weather service's Huntsville office, said rain is possible tonight and Tuesday morning before thunderstorms arrive around noon and continue into the evening.

"The main risk right now is damaging winds," Kula said. "You can't rule out a tornado, but it's on the low end of the risk."

The edge of a slow-moving winter storm in the Midwest is bringing the threat of thunderstorms to north Alabama but won't drop temperatures dramatically.

After temperatures climb near 70 Tuesday, highs will be in the 50s on Thursday and 40s Friday. It's possible lows Friday morning will dip below freezing, Kula said.
