Strong winds to close, delay these ski resorts

EDEN, Utah (ABC4) — Powder Mountain will close for night skiing Friday and day skiing Saturday as the resort says extreme winds make lift operations unsafe.

The resort said if the winds calm down on Saturday afternoon, they will open for night skiing.

“The safety of our guests and employees is our top priority,” the resort said on social media.

Additionally, Solitude Mountain Resort said the winds “could delay or close Summit Express” on Saturday.

Summit Access West, Honeycomb Return Trail, and lower Northstar will be already closed to start the day for the USA Skimo National Championships, the resort said on social media.

According to 4Warn Weather, strong winds ahead of an incoming cold front will bring winds of 25-40 mph to the western half of the state and into the Salt Lake Valley, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph. Even stronger winds are possible on Saturday.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory until 11 p.m. Friday and a high wind warning from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday.

This is a developing story. ABC4 will update this post with more information as it becomes available.
