Strong storms possible Thursday and into the holiday weekend

NEW: A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for counties near I-65 and eastward until 7pm tonight.

Today (Thursday, May 23), strong storms are possible. The Storm Prediction Center has put much of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky under slight risk (level 2/5).

The main threats with these storms will be wind, hail, and heavy rain which could lead to flooding.

Scattered storms will develop this afternoon and evening. A few could be strong and gusty with wind & hail concerns, along with very heavy rainfall & lightning.

On Friday, there is a Slight Risk (level 2/5) for areas in west/northwest Middle Tennessee and southwest Southern Kentucky, and a Marginal Risk (level 1/5) the rest of our area. Note that an added low-end tornado risk is in this forecast for our far west counties.

On Friday, a few morning showers are likely, but storms will fire up midday and through the afternoon. Some could turn severe, and the primary risk will be wind.

Memorial Day weekend will feature scattered showers and storms. Some strong storms are possible Saturday as all of Middle Tennessee & southwest Southern Kentucky are under a Marginal Risk (level 1/5). The timing would be during the afternoon.

Sunday through 7 AM Monday is a time frame where you will need to stay weather alert as the Storm Prediction Center has put most of Middle Tennessee and all of Southern Kentucky under a 30% risk for severe storms. All modes of severe weather are possible including tornadoes, wind, hail, and heavy rain.

Latest model data shows morning rain & storms, then a break and some sun with isolated storms. The time frame for severe weather appears to be Sunday afternoon through early Monday.
