Strong Quake Causes Widespread Damage to Homes and Businesses in Guanica, Puerto Rico

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit the US island territory of Puerto Rico on Tuesday morning, January 7, according to the US Geological Survey, knocking out power across the island, including at San Juan Airport.

Widespread damage to homes and businesses was reported in the town of Guanica, as seen in this video, and in Guayanilla, where the Church of the Immaculate Conception was severely damaged by the quake.

Jose Ortiz, an official with the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, told El Nuevo Dia that power plants shut down as a protective measure. The National Weather Service’s Tsunami Warning Center said there was no risk of a tsunami. Credit: El Leon Fiscalizador via Storyful
