Strong earthquake strikes northeast of Barbados
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A magnitude-6.7 earthquake struck northeast of Barbados early Tuesday, but there were no reports of damage and casualties, officials said.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the temblor was centered some 172 kilometers (107 miles) northeast of Bathsheba, Barbados. Police Constable Chris Greg told The Associated Press in a phone interview that the earthquake was strong but that so far no damage or casualties have been reported.
USGS said the earthquake struck at a depth of 17 kilometers (10.5 miles).
The eastern Caribbean was last struck by a powerful earthquake in 2007, when a magnitude-7.4 one centered just northwest of Martinique's coastline severely damaged some buildings on the island.
