CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

Curtis claimed the third state title in program history with the overtime upset of the previously undefeated defending champion Wildcats. The Vikings previously won in the Tacoma Dome in 2013, when they topped Jackson. Curtis also bested Battle Ground in 1971 at the UPS Fieldhouse. The Vikings are also the first Pierce County boys team to win a 4A title since the last time they won, and first boys team overall in the county to take home a championship since Foss won 2A in 2017 in Yakima.

With Saturday’s win over the 4A KingCo’s Mount Si, Curtis coach Tim Kelly collected his second title as the head of the Vikings program, and fourth overall, becoming the 14th boys basketball coach in state history to reach four championship wins. Kelly also became the first boys coach to guide a program to multiple titles at more than one school. Kelly’s first championship win at Curtis was in 2013 over 4A Wesco program Jackson. He also won two at Lincoln, topping 4A in back-to-back seasons in 2001 and 2002. Both of those title wins were against Greater Spokane League member Ferris.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

The third time was the charm for Woodinville. Appearing in the 4A title game for the third time in the past four tournaments, the Falcons finally secured the program’s first state championship by edging first-time state participant Sumner in the final. Woodinville also advanced in 2018 and 2020, but lost to Central Valley both times. The Falcons are a combined 76-7 in the three seasons they have advanced to a title game.

Camas added to a 4A tournament record set a day earlier by launching six more 3-pointers in its fourth-place win over Lake Stevens. That brought the Papermakers’ total to 37 on a record 107 attempts (34.6 percent), which eclipses the previous current era mark of 27 by Issaquah in 2020 and original era mark when four games were possible of 28 by Woodinville in 2008. Camas also set the record for most team 3-pointers in a single game (12) in Friday’s consolation win over Lake Stevens, surpassing Glacier Peak, which made 11 in 2020.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

This season marked the 25th time Auburn has appeared in the state playoffs, but the Trojans had never won a state title — or even advanced to a championship game — until Saturday night. The Trojans beat a perennial stat power in Rainier Beach — a nine-time champion — to close out their historic season.

DID YOU KNOW?

Auburn’s championship run this weekend ended a streak of nine consecutive tournaments during which the 3A Metro League produced the eventual state winner. Rainier Beach (four titles), Garfield (three), Nathan Hale (one) and O’Dea (one) all won titles during that stretch. The last time before Saturday a Metro League team didn’t win the title was in 2011, when Lakes topped Bellevue. This was also only the second time since that 2011 title game that the championship did not feature two Metro League teams. The other disruption to that streak was in 2019, when Mount Spokane advanced.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

Garfield rallied from a late deficit against Lake Washington to complete an undefeated season and secure a second consecutive title. The Bulldogs have now won five championships in eight appearances in the game in their history. Their previous titles were in 1980, 1987, 2005 and 2020. This is the first time since the first championship 42 years ago the Bulldogs have made an undefeated run to a title.

DID YOU KNOW?

Garfield’s win over Lake Washington was a rematch of the 2020 title game, when the Bulldogs topped the Kangaroos, 55-41. This was the fourth time since WIAA expanded to six classifications in 2006-07 that two girls programs have played each other in back-to-back championship games. Mark Morris and W.F. West met in the 2A title game three times from 2013-15. Colton and Pomeroy played twice for a 1B championship in 2018-19. Colton also played Almire-Coulee-Hartline twice in the 1B title game in 2010-11.
