He stole a car with a dog inside, then threw the pup into river, Louisiana police say

A Louisiana man is in custody after he stole a car with an elderly dog inside, threw the pup in a river and tased two deputies, the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office received a call about a stolen car with an elderly Jack Russell terrier inside on Monday, according to an arrest affidavit. A deputy spotted the car in Monroe and tried to pull it over, the affidavit said.

The suspect refused to stop, and the deputy chased after the stolen car, the sheriff’s office said. Eventually, the suspect stopped the car, got out and ran, according to the arrest affidavit.

The deputy chased the suspect, who was found inside another car trying to hide, the affidavit said. When the deputy opened the door, the suspect ran again and another chase ensued, according to the affidavit.

Deputies “discharged a taser to take the suspect into custody,” the affidavit said. But while the deputies were trying to put him in handcuffs, the suspect grabbed a deputy’s taser and tased two deputies, according to the affidavit.

Deputies were eventually able to handcuff the suspect, who was identified as Gregory Burton, 42, of Richwood, Louisiana, the sheriff’s office said. The deputy who arrested Burton asked him what happened to the Jack Russell terrier, and Burton said he threw the dog out of the moving car and into the Ouachita River, according to the affidavit.

Deputies searched the area, found the dog safe and returned it to its owner, KNOE reported. Burton is being held without bail at the Ouachita Correctional Center, according to the sheriff’s office.

Burton is charged with animal cruelty, battery of a police officer, resisting an officer, disarming of a peace officer and theft of a motor vehicle, the sheriff’s office says.
