Stockton launches new workboat to clean lake at Weber Point

(FOX40.COM) — The city of Stockton christened a new vessel on Wednesday to clean the waters of McLeod Lake at Weber Point and the downtown channels.

The specialized workboat is a catamaran designed to pick up debris and invasive vegetation from the surface of the lake and waterways as it moves along the water.

Crewed by two Stockton Municipal Utilities Department (MUD) employees, the boat will be on call to pick up debris on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, according to the city.

“McLeod Lake is in the heart of our city, just across the street from City Hall,” said Mayor Kevin Lincoln. “The new workboat will help us continue our mission to keep our downtown waterfront clean and be good stewards of the environment.”

This new workboat will replace the pontoon boat that has been used by MUD for waterway maintenance at the Delta Water Supply Project Intake Pump Station.

The intake station is a source for much of Stockton’s drinking water and the Regional Wastewater Control Facility that processes wastewater for Stockton.

“Over the past several years, McLeod Lake has diminished in popularity, particularly during the summer months, due to invasive water hyacinth, trash, and harmful algal blooms,” explained Dr. Mel Lytle, Director of Municipal Utilities.

This new workboat and the accompanying McLeod Lake Cleanup Program aim to change that narrative for the lake and its reputation across Stockton.
