Stocks slip in early trading; Dell, Smucker drop

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are opening slightly lower on Wall Street. Dell and Smucker are falling after their earnings reports disappointed investors.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 21 points to 12,520 shortly after the opening bell Friday.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was down two points at 1,351 and the Nasdaq composite was off seven at 2,830.

Dell dropped 5 percent after the company reported late Thursday that its financial performance continued to deteriorate in the third quarter, along with the rest of the personal computer industry.

J.M. Smucker, which makes Jif peanut butter and Folgers coffee, issued a profit forecast for the full year that was below Wall Street's projections. Its stock was off 3 percent.
