Stimpson wins 1st round of triathlon World Series

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — Last season's series runner-up Jodie Stimpson of Britain recorded a commanding win Sunday in the elite women's race at the opening round of the ITU Triathlon World Series.

Stimpson completed the 1.5 kilometer swim, 40 kilometer cycle and 10 kilometer run in 2 hours, 8 minutes, 34 seconds, which was 25 seconds ahead of last year's Auckland winner Anne Haug of Germany. Two-time world champion Helen Jenkins of Britain was third a further 11 seconds behind.

Stimpson produced a well-judged race, showing her fitness on the hilly course for the cycle and running legs. She was able to ease away from the field on the run while Haug finished strongly to claim the silver medal.

The elite men's race will be held over the same course later Sunday.
