Still Resisting Bone Broth? This Tasty, Health-Boosting Recipe Will Win You Over

Boiling a bunch of bones may not be the sexiest pastime around, but it might be the healthiest. Bone broth — made by simmering animal bones in water for six to 12 hours — boasts a slew of health benefits. The high content of calcium, magnesium, collagen, gelatin, amino acids, and phosphorus is thought to rejuvenate the gut, improve digestion, support joint tissue, bolster the immune system, preserve skin elasticity, and more.

And lest you think bone broth is a fleeting food craze, chef Ariane Resnick, author of The Bone Broth Miracle, says the medicinal use of this mineral-rich brew “dates back to prehistoric times, and is one of the cornerstones of the Paleo Diet.”

Yahoo Health contributor Max Lugavere caught up with Resnick at The 2015 Bulletproof Biohacking Conference — check out their chat in the video above — to hear more about this healthy diet staple.

Down to whip up a batch of bone broth yourself? “It’s hugely important [when picking bones] that the animal be grass-fed and pastured/organic if red meat, or at least organic, and preferably pastured, if poultry,” says Resnick. “And if it’s fish, that it be wild.” Below, she offers one easy soup recipe to try.

Souper Simple Avo-Brodo

Ingredients

  • 2 cups bone broth

  • 2 medium avocados

  • Juice of one lemon

  • 1 tablespoon Brain Octane oil (or other MCT oil)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Heat bone broth to at least room temperature to return to a liquid state, or further for a hot soup. Blend all ingredients until smooth, adding water for a thinner texture if desired. Serve warm or chilled. Note: Use extreme caution when blending hot liquids!
