‘Still a loving, happy dog’: Humane Society in Wisconsin rescues extremely malnourished Chocolate Lab

MERILL, Wis. (WFRV) – A Chocolate Lab mix dog in Wisconsin is on his way back to full health after being found by a humane society as a stray.

According to the Lincoln County Humane Society, Gunther arrived at the facility last Friday and was so weak that it was difficult for him to stand or walk.

Gunther’s bones, which were clearly visible under his skin, show how long he has suffered, whether by accident or if someone deliberately withheld food from him for a long period of time.

“What we do know is that although Gunther has clearly suffered, he is still a loving, happy dog,” said the Lincoln County Humane Society. “He trusts people and you can tell when you look into his eyes he knows we will do all we can to help him.”

Gunther was taken to one of the veterinarians on Friday, and his chances of survival are high, but he does need to be hospitalized to monitor blood levels and make sure he doesn’t develop any issues during sensitive times.

Additionally, Gunther weighs around 15 pounds, which is way under the standard for a dog his size. Experts say that if he had been given proper care, Gunther would have weighed around 40 pounds.

“Gunther has seen enough bad things happen right now; he needs helpers to support his care during this time,” said the Lincoln County Humane Society. “His veterinarian bill will likely be more than $1,500, and every donation will help us save this little life.”

The veterinarian is providing a significant discount to help care for Gunther.

The community has immediately responded and raised over $5,500 for Gunther, something that humane society staff are grateful for.

Gunther will have a foster home lined up when his hospitalization is done, and the humane society isn’t taking adoption applications at this time but could do so in the future.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is already involved and has an open file for Gunther. Anyone who may have owned Gunther previously, you are encouraged to contact deputies at 715-536-6272.
